Architectural Excellence : Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) was still in the midst of district wide renovations and rebuilding following Hurricane Katrina and needed a cost-effective temporary high school campus while they constructed a high school facility. Due to OPSB’s budget restrictions and time constraints, M Space suggested the school district use pre-leased buildings as their temporary campus. The school district agreed and M Space provided them with two 12-classroom buildings, a commercial grade kitchen and cafeteria space. Canopies and walkways were installed to connect each building so the students could safely travel from one to another.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The use of buildings that were pre-leased significantly reduced overall project costs. By using existing buildings, the school district not only saved money, but also reduced the impact on the environment. The use of existing buildings avoided unnecessary use of energy and materials required for a new building.

Using Allied Modular Partitions also saved the customer money. The partitions are fully finished on both sides and are already wired with electricity and data. The partitions are quickly and easily installed with no additional construction needed and they are reusable; making them a ‘green’ and economic choice. Each classroom is equipped with individual heating and cooling units and new programmable thermostats were installed allowing heat or conditioned air to be adjusted based on the location of the occupants saving energy and heating and cooling costs. Transportation costs were also saved by having everything the high school students and teachers needed at one location.

Technical Innovation : Although the buildings were originally classroom facilities they needed to be repurposed to meet the specific requirements of the high school campus. Portions of classrooms were made into office areas, conference rooms and staff restrooms using Allied Modular Partition Areas. In addition, the kitchen facility was remodeled to incorporate new equipment that was needed to serve 800 meals a day. Lastly, the plumbing in the kitchen and restrooms was upgraded to meet the stringent New Orleans code.
