Award Winner : Modern Building Systems, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : Oregon Childhood Development Coalition has constructed many modular education facilities in partnership with Modern Building Systems. Each building reflects the personality of the community that it is serving, including its latest expansion – a sustainably focused and bright learning environment in Hillsboro, OR. The building features covered play areas to keep students active in the rainy Northwest and a cutting edge design to utilize space efficiency and blend the building with the site’s natural features and existing foliage. Thoughtful consideration was given to the teaching staff’s work processes when designing the floorplan and classroom features. Child friendly finishes with ease-of-use in mind dominate the open and well lit spaces. The vaulted entry, echoing the lines and grace of the roof overbuild, gives the surrounding neighborhood a welcoming beckon.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : As a non-profit organization, Oregon Childhood Development Coalition has thrived largely due to their keen stewardship of resources and thoughtful gearing of programs and facilities to best serve their students and families. They give every aspect of each project time for consideration and encourage openness to creativity. The Hillsboro project was much the same, requiring out of the box thinking to design a building that suited the site efficiently but also included all of the features and tools necessary for an above average learning environment. Finishes tailored to the sustainable practices that OCDC desired (and the eventual cost-savings of such technologies), keeping flexibility of the learning environment a part of the vision for the space, as well as specialized turn-key project management, still resulted in an incredibly efficient cost per square foot – thanks to a wonderful and cooperative team of problem solvers.

Technical Innovation : After aggressive research and consultation with energy-management experts, OCDC chose a Mitsubishi Multi City heating & cooling system. Consistently performing at approximately 25% higher efficiency than a traditional counterpart, the Mitsubishi system solved one of the oldest battles in education: targeted temperature control geared towards the immediate audience. This system enables teachers and staff to control the atmosphere of their immediate learning environment and correctly tailor it to the activity level and personal preferences of the inhabitants. Giving the staff the respect of flexibility and removing the learning obstacle of inappropriately maintained environments was vital to the OCDC planning team. The same type of care went into choosing finishes, sourced from companies also on the forefront of sustainable technologies, including: providing green flooring, Low-E windows (vital considering the amount of daylighting involved)and reclaimed lumber fencing.
