Architectural Excellence : To bring the past into the present was the intent of the Orange Empire Railway Museum, the architect, and Silver Creek’s design team when the project was first discussed. OERM needed a facility to house their vast collection of historical train memorabilia and archives. Based on the design of a memorable Harvey House in Vaughn, New Mexico, the building will display archives of our nation’s historical westward expansion. Two large main rooms house the museum's archives displays, file archive storage, and office space for staff and librarians. A portion of the building was designed to provide lecture and meeting space for public and private functions for the museum. The building’s exterior consists of a stucco finish. High parapet roofs encapsulated the perimeter of the modular building enhancing its proportions. The striking front gabled entry is a 760 sf attached site built walkway with stunning arches covered with wood trellis, red spanish tile and a stone accent base.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Due to the cost and delivery schedule restraints of conventional construction, Orange Empire Railway Museum considered modular building construction as a faster, more cost effective delivery approach to their permanent archival building. The OERM, architect and Silver Creek design team’s upfront collaboration on the delivery approach led to design saving changes and the majority of the work being completed in the offsite construction facility, acquiring sufficient cost savings in the resourcefulness of the modular construction process. The rapid design and approval methods of modular construction allowed the conference facilities to be used for OERM functions that were originally planned off site, immediately increasing the revenue of the museum.

Technical Innovation : The owner required an innovative system of construction to establish the connection between simple geometric forms and specialized modular structures. The irregular building frame sizes and the tall site built front entry facade come together as individual free standing structures tied together as one with a connection that is visually seamless. All archival and display rooms maximize ceiling heights and have lighting controls to allow the display of archives in a controlled setting. Multi-level switching for all light fixtures allows for the reduction of electrical lighting use when adequate daylight is available. In addition, all lighting is controlled by occupancy sensors which automatically turn off the lights when the rooms are not in use.
