Onondaga Lakeshore Visitors Center
Additional Info
Award Winner : Modular Genius, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : Parsons is managing the decontamination and remediation of the Onondaga Lake in Syracuse New York on behalf of Honeywell International. This project will include the dredging of approximately 2,653,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediments and wastes. Given the central role played by the lake in the surrounding community, Honeywell is strongly committed to the selected remedy that will help restore this resource and enhance the quality of life in the community. Modular Genius worked with Parsons to design and build a Visitor’s Center and Reception Center that would overlook the lake remediation progress and allow the community to enjoy the Lake’s progress. Large mill finished aluminum fixed glass windows together with Tubelite “Thermal” commercial aluminum store front exterior doors with full height vision panel side lites allow the visitors to stand in the building while enjoying a 180 degree view of the progress.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Modular Genius deliberated the option of constructing the small entry way and connecting corridor on site. After consideration of the high wage rates in the area and the potential of site inspections slowing the projects progress, Modular Genius and Mobile Modular Express worked to develop the panelized alternative. The panelized pieces were manufactured at the plant and designed to be easily attached to the modular buildings utilizing pre-engineered integrated building supports. The pieces included all subsystems including electrical and mechanical conduits and raceways. Modular Genius estimated that the panelized construction cost was approximately 40 percent less than having the small sections site built and inspected.

Technical Innovation : The engineers for Parsons Honeywell designed the Visitors Center with an unusual configuration. Their goal was to optimize the visitor’s view of the Onondaga Lake in the observation area while separating the reception area to accommodate any meetings or small gatherings. While maintaining both of these objectives the footprint forced an awkward floor plan that was not conducive for traditional modular construction. Modular Genius and Mobile Modular Express designed the modular building utilizing panelized pieces for the small connecting corridor and the entry vestibule. The panelized pieces were constructed in the plant and sealed by a licensed engineer so that the building could be permitted as one structure. Once in place, Modular Genius site installed reclaimed hard wood flooring to ensure a smooth flow throughout the structure.
