Olympic Games Commentator Booths

Architectural Excellence : Collaborating with the client’s engineering team, Britco custom-designed these units to the Vancouver Organizing Committee and Olympic Broadcast Services’ specifications for commentator control rooms and sports production offices for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games mountain venues. The booths were used by television networks from around the world, each with their own requirements. Britco’s design team worked closely with the Olympic Organizing Committee to work out the best design solutions to ensure that every user’s needs were accommodated.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Low E windows and high insulation values were used to maximize comfort levels and energy efficiency as much as possible, considering the mountain locations and continuous flow of people in and out of the buildings. This project is a good example of modular sustainability as many of the modules were incorporated into Britco’s lease fleet and the balance of units sold for offices or other modular applications after the Games.

Technical Innovation : Built to withstand heavy snow and wind loads at two sport venues on Vancouver’s Cypress Mountain and five separate mountain venues at Whistler, the units were designed to meet exacting requirements for substantial amounts of teledata cabling and sound proofing, as well as extensive glazing to maximize visual sight lines. Removable partitions and rough-ins for heating and electrical were built in so the buildings could be reused for other applications. Stacked together two-high, the modules were secured to platform grandstands that were up to 150 feet above snow level in some areas. The modules were also engineered to support camera and viewing platforms built on top of the buildings.
