Architectural Excellence : One of Hillsborough County’s elementary schools, Oak Grove was dealing with increased student enrollments and needed additional space. ModSpace delivered (4) 12’x36’ modules that provided permanent classroom space in a very limited area. The new classrooms were built with one hour fire rated materials that reduced building placement requirements by 20 feet. In addition to the reduced footprint the four units were placed 4” above grade which minimized the need for ADA ramps. The interior walls were designed with hardi-board for easy maintenance and less damage. The units incorporated clear span construction to allow for an open space classroom and future reconfiguration. The exterior materials were perfectly matched to existing buildings to blend in with campus image. The building was finished on site to give it a seamless - under one roof look. The final building structure included a covered walkway running the length of the building for safety and protection from the elements.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The buildings were installed on strip footers instead of a complete poured foundation allowing for existing impervious ground. A white EPDM roof was installed to facilitate higher UV reflection and reduce cooling costs. All classrooms were installed with programmable thermostats to help save money by regulating the temperature based on occupancy times. The internal hardi-board material will be easy to maintain and hard to damage reducing overall internal maintenance costs. Using existing exterior materials helps reduce costs as well by assuring standard maintenance repairs across the campus.

Technical Innovation : The one hour fire rating allows these units to be set side by side with a seamless connection that gives the appearance of one larger building. The units have an 8’6” ceiling height providing an open feel to the classrooms. The use of hardi-board interior will reduce the typical interior damage that occurs in classrooms. The use of hardi-exterior stucco gives the buildings a conventional construction look. The single slope to the hitch end eliminates the concern for drainage and is therefore less susceptible to water damage.
