Award Winner : Art's-Way Scientific, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : Art’s Way Scientific worked with a Midwestern industry leader in research-based feed additives, probiotics, protein technology, nutritional, and water quality products for animal production to design and deliver a self-contained, research ready facility. This structural insulated panel constructed, 1088 sf unit meets industry requirements for the modeling of swine disease and nutritional studies. The building is protected by a 160 sf bio-secure personal protection room entry with boot dip station. A 160-sf laboratory area is used for research and is isolated from animal holding areas. Supply air is conditioned in a 184 sf preheat room that also serves as a feed storage area. The 584-sf animal housing area features custom designed adjustable stainless steel pens, expanded steel plastisol mesh flooring, independent animal watering and adjustable feed systems. Natural lighting is provided by fixed insulated windows.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : By selecting modular construction, the owner enjoys the flexibility and financial benefits it produces. The owner works in partnership with a contract research company on certain projects. By selecting modular construction, they have the option of relocation should the contract or type of research change. This gives the owner a valuable position in control of their contracts. Traditionally, the owner would lease space or buy a permanent unit. The costs of maintaining these fixed assets and real estate are minimized by placement of the module on a prepared site with 150A, single phase power and simplified water and sewer connections. These are all accessible with minimal disruption to existing work in other facilities. Traditional laboratory animal housing and research space costs in excess $600 per sf. By combining our expertise and experience in modular buildings with research, Art’s Way Scientific provides these environments for significantly less.

Technical Innovation : The building HVAC control system is programmed to distribute 100% fresh air to the animal room. Air is brought in through a filter bank, heated or cooled as needed for animal comfort then enters the animal room through wall and ceiling inlets for even distribution. Air is exhausted through variable speed fans and provides animals with a constant, comfortable environment that minimizes any airborne contaminants. Human environments are tempered using thermostatically controlled wall units. From the fiberglassed wall system to the epoxy flooring, cleaning is simplified, and large trench drains quickly remove water and animal waste. Stainless steel doors and fixtures were installed. The procedure room has an LED exam light with open concept to fit multiple tables or carts for work, research or to transfer animals. Point of use water heater, LED fixtures, timers and sensors all contribute to building efficiency. The self-contained pit provides economical waste management.
