North Thurston Public Schools Early Learning Centers

Additional Info

Award Winner : Pacific Mobile Structures, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : The building was built with a transverse pitch hinged roof to allow both side and end entrances flowing traffic down a common hallway to a center location. Each classroom is self-sustaining with its own restroom for young children and built in custom cabinetry. Allowances were made for full administrative services with lounge, counseling and laundry facilities. The building includes larger overhangs to protect the Hardie board siding from the wet climate of the Pacific Northwest. The design allows for future expansion if needed by adding either 28x68 or 42x68 components. The building was installed on a stem wall foundation giving it a permanent look and feel.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Northwest proven product such as Hardie Cement board siding and Pabco comp roofing with larger overhangs will help the building achieve a larger life span. More efficient Pad mounted heat pumps will save energy over stand-alone end mount HVAC units. Providing one building with eight classrooms, storage, restrooms and teacher area rather than having eight to ten single modular classrooms saves money by only having one pad prep, one electrical and one plumbing connection.

Technical Innovation : The building provides maximum space for teaching and storage by adding a module for every four classrooms including restrooms and storage without impeding in the classroom envelope. In order to provide the customer with a higher pitched roof, we hinged the roof to allow for a 3:12 pitch. Other features were installing an open beam below the t-grid ceiling allowing the district to attach an occupational therapy swing in the classroom for children with special needs. By creating a larger enclosed multi room school, rather than using the standard stand-alone modular classroom, the district now has a better sense of student safety.
