Architectural Excellence : A large redevelopment of the downtown parking, waterfront and transit terminal sites meant the city needed a Parking & Access Control Kiosk to complement the architectural features of the newly refurbished Railway Station Museum. Divided into a parking office and washroom, the office area has three walls of glass for clear view of the parking area, transaction windows for the entrance and exit lanes, and bronze colored glass spandrel panels around the washroom area to provide the look of continuous glazing. A full 8' wide counter provides ample room for pay-point equipment, computer and work space. The washroom allows access to the office and outdoors. The exterior "heritage" appearance was key to the design, so the base is clad with a stone finish to match the museum. The vertical columns, window mullions and hip roof are also architectural details used from the museum. All aluminum framing components are custom powder coated to exactly match the City of North Bay color schemes.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The general contractor hired for this redevelopment project originally intended to site build the parking kiosk as the thought was it couldn’t otherwise match the museum customization for features and finishes was easily adapted to the off-site design and the building actually came in under budget. The modular concept also solved construction schedule issues as the foundation pad under the kiosk was poured late in the project schedule which didn’t allow enough time to site build the parking kiosk. Built-in features for extended life and reduced maintenance are applied with this aluminum framed building system, as parking lot layouts are subject to change regularly and it is extremely common to see parking kiosks relocated, reused and repurposed, eliminating the need to engage in costly demolition and reconstruction.

Technical Innovation : The one piece welded steel frame floor structure is hot dipped galvanized to provide a longer lifecycle, with less maintenance. The wall structure is our C4000 4" thermally broken aluminum framing system. The C4000 members act as a curtain-wall window framing system while also providing all the structural support needed for the roof loads above, so no additional support columns or sub structure are required. The roof structure is designed to appear as a standard hip roof but in actuality the central area is recessed 30" to provide an enclosed space for the roof top air conditioner unit. Two evenly spaced roof drains effectively remove the rain water and A/C condensate from this recessed roof.
