Nexen Control Room
Additional Info
Award Winner : BCT Structures, A Clean Harbors Company
Architectural Excellence : This 5,760 sq. ft. blast resistant control building is utilized as the main control center for the project site. The building consists of a combination of modules installed side by side and end to end. The design of the building incorporates male & female locker rooms, lunchroom, shipping & receiving and specialized computer control room with raised computer floor system, server rooms and UPS data room.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Due to the remote location, the client utilized modular construction and was able to save time on site and minimize on site workforce to erect the building as well as cost. Increased wall and floor thickness to accommodate blast pressure also meant increased insulation and R values in these areas leading to lower thermal losses.

Project Location City : Northern Alberta
Project Location State Name : AB
Technical Innovation : The structure is located within a blast zone and had to be designed to withstand that associated pressure associated with a blast event. The control center has a raised computer raceway flooring system that required special foundation design details due to the modules being mounted to the foundation at different elevations as well as take into consideration blast design. Housing highly sensitive electronic equipment vital for the functioning of the facility, oxygen starving fire suppressions system in the control center was incorporated. This system required to make the rooms air tight and include 2 hour fire walls. The entire building has a sophisticated HVAC system that created technical challenges to incorporate into the dimensional constraints of modular construction. It also included safety features to shut down in the event of H2S. Additionally, the UPS room had to be designed to withstand the weight of the equipment and floor loading was increased to 300 PSF in that area.
