Architectural Excellence : Six 40' High Cube ISO shipping containers were stacked and configured to create a tactical training facility for the New Jersey State Police. The first level is comprised of four containers. Two containers were placed on the second level and there is a 20' x 8' deck that was built on top. The first level of the facility was designed with two exit/entry points, multiple interior rooms and several doorways. The objective was to create as many ambush points and different entry scenarios as possible. On the first level, a “T” shaped hallway leads to and from the exit/entry points. There are four windows that allow for natural light and also provide for other training scenarios. An interior staircase leads to the second level which has two rooms and an “L” shaped kitchen. An attic like access was built on the second level and leads to the deck above. An I-beam, seven feet above the deck height, was installed to help mimic helicopter infiltration.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : We were able to modify each container module offsite without any disruption to the daily operations of the New Jersey State Police. By building offsite, we were able to forego any weather delays. We delivered and installed the facility in one day with minimal disruption to normal operations. Because we used shipping containers, the overall cost was a fraction of what it would have been had they chose to use standard construction methods.

Technical Innovation : By repurposing used shipping containers, we were able to utilize units that would otherwise be sitting and degrading in a container yard. This method of construction also allows the New Jersey State Police to create a training space that was not only durable and versatile, but also has the ability to expand and be reconfigured to meet other training needs in the future. The facility helps the police department to train in a safe environment and help save countless lives when out in the field.
