Architectural Excellence : With the absence of a MRI, patients of the Neurology and Stroke Associates in Lititz, PA were forced to travel to surrounding cities for scans. For the independently owned and operated practice to improve their patient’s experience they sought to add their own system, but zoning and limited space for new construction made this a challenge. Innovative Modular Solutions, along with the civil engineer, developed a solution that would adhere to the zoning requirements and allow for the installation of a new Phillips 3.0 Tesla MRI system. The design also allowed for the expansion of the practice’s infusion treatment chairs. The two module building was designed to blend with the existing structure and met all requirements of the 3.0 Tesla MRI system including RF and Magnetic shielding. The interior finishes included custom cabinetry and countertops, granite window sill in the MRI viewing area and state of the art backlit designer sky tiles to ensure patient comfort in the MRI room.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : A modular building option was chosen to reduce the overall construction cost and completion time. With a relatively moderate cost of labor locally, protracted construction schedule due to winter weather conditions, it was estimated that the total cost of construction was 20%-25% less than conventional methods. In addition, the factory fabrication process reduced disruption to the existing practice. The reduction in time to completion allowed the client to begin seeing imaging patients sooner than expected, allowing the practice to begin generating revenue and realizing a return on investment immediately.
Green Building Description : The MRI addition was built to be as energy efficient as possible. The building utilizes high efficiency HVAC equipment and the building envelope exceeds all energy code requirements. The interior finishes, including the paint and flooring, have Low Volatile Organic (VOC) compounds to ensure it is a safe environment for patients and staff.

Technical Innovation : The MRI building addition’s room system was designed to meet the required ceiling height of 10 feet to accommodate the equipment while still maintaining the legal shipping height. The mechanical system designed for the building supports optimum MRI and Infusion equipment operation that maintains a consistent, comfortable temperature during peak and off-peak times. Humidification controls have been installed in the scan room to keep the equipment and other sensitive electronics within manufacturer tolerances. The return air duct serving the MRI scanner room is equipped with an electronically actuated damper that is located outside of the scan room which will close if the scan room’s emergency exhaust fan is activated. All ductwork, fasteners, hangers and appurtenances within the RF shield are non-ferrous. A UPS system was also installed in the building to provide supplemental power to the MRI system to protect the super conducting magnet from damage during a prolonged power outage.
