Architectural Excellence : This temporary solution was designed mutually for clinical and laboratory applications to support investigations in autoimmune, infectious diseases and developmental defects, incorporating complex mechanical & building systems. The factory was chosen based on the proximity to the customer’s site allowing for the use of 16’ wide modules, encapsulating important sections of the design. The buildings design utilized some of the natural contours of the site and, reducing two of the modules, created a strong entrance with a shadow light contrast that, in addition to the roof lines, materials, control joints and colors, aesthetically blended with the architectural style of the other existing buildings. Ultimately the modularity of the solution offered a unique option to NEIHS in creating an attractive, fully code compliant, functional space, which still has the flexibility of easy removal.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Placement and design of the building took careful consideration of elements of weather and relationship of the sun in association to functional programming of the building. To provide for a more efficient design, the nursing station and clinical areas were positioned with sun lights toward direct sunlight. The lab areas, which generate a considerable amount of heat, were positioned in shaded areas. The design of the project allowed for a smaller footprint, taking patient flow in the most economical fashion into account. This in turn provided value in the initial stages of the project.

Technical Innovation : The project acted to be fully design built using an A&E team that held years of complicated system experience through work on modular BLS-3 applications and was built to meet the following codes: IBG/ADA/IPC/NEC/IMG/IECC. A central boiler and chillers were required for the mechanical systems and the building features included full med gasses, level-2 BSC’s & fume hoods, pressurized spaces, filtration, humidification, VFP’s, VAV’s, redundant power, Inhalation Chamber, Fluoroscopy, code blue & commissioning. Although built through modular methods, insuring the same functional user requirements was critical in bringing on state of the art scientists for this first NEIHS outpatient clinical research unit to help bridge the gap between bench science and patient care.
