Award Winner : Triumph Modular

Architectural Excellence : This 7800 square foot classroom space was designed to optimize program space both indoors and outdoors on a restricted site, and to contribute flow of the Needham Mitchell Elementary School campus. The modular building features 4 new classrooms, 4 bathrooms and much needed storage space. The new modular addition was built in the location of existing basketball courts. A new basketball court was built behind the modular building consisting of 10 modules. The space was designed and installed for elementary students with natural lighting, quality finishes and vibrant colors. Some examples of what makes this building unique are corrugated steel siding on the exterior and an abundant use of glass windows which allow the classrooms to be illuminated with natural light.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Due to overcrowding and student growth, an on-time and on-budget solution was required. We provided the Needham Mitchell Elementary School with 4 additional classrooms and wide expansive corridors to accommodate children. A primary reason for the use of modular construction for this project lies in the nature of the construction challenges inherent to the site.

Technical Innovation : This project was required to meet the Mass “Stretch” Energy code adopted by the City of Needham (MA) which requires improved energy efficiency, insulation and other building performance beyond national standards. Sophisticated lighting controls and daylight harvesting optimize light quality as well as minimize energy usage. Insulation systems combine traditional batt, rigid board along with spray in foam applications to optimize the thermal integrity of the overall envelope. The prefabrication in an offsite location enabled more careful installation of these systems. Mechanical systems were designed to work with natural ventilation systems (operable windows and ceiling fans) to optimize air quality and comfort while minimizing energy use with a high efficiency HVAC system.
