Architectural Excellence : Munroe Regional Medical Center, a thriving hospital in Ocala, FL, needed a long-term modular space solution to quickly expand its human resources, organizational development and employee health departments. The client required that M Space provide three new buildings away from the existing hospital site, allowing their former spaces to be renovated and used for expanded medical care. M Space installed (1) 48 x 48 and (2) 48 x 84 buildings next to each other on an adjoining parking lot to the existing hospital. The buildings include administrative offices, exam rooms, restrooms and a break room to comfortably accommodate employees as well as visitors and patients.

The buildings are conveniently located within a short walking distance from the existing hospital. Spacious and attractive covered walkways connect the units for easier access. The buildings were designed to not only complement the existing hospital facilities but provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : M Space completed the project in 53 days, saving the client money and eliminating the need to lease additional space. Modular construction allowed staff members to quickly resume functions and serve the local community much faster than with site-built construction. The biggest advantage was that the existing hospital could continue its operations with limited site disruption.

The buildings were designed to be comfortable, energy-efficient and adhere to Florida Energy Code. Windows were insulated with a design pressure rating of 55 to withstand strong winds and thick insulation was installed on the floors (R-19), walls (R-13) and roof (R-30) to increase thermal performance. The buildings also feature programmable thermostats, interior T8 fluorescent light bulbs with electronic ballasts and photocells on exterior lights contributing to lower energy costs. Additionally, white EPDM roofing was installed for durability and low-flow toilets and self-closing faucets to conserve water.

Technical Innovation : Access to the site was tight and the parking lot was tiered and terraced. With limited space, transferring modules from the street to the final location proved difficult. M Space used an all-terrain forklift to carefully stage and move units. Buildings were designed with steel perimeter frames and floor joists, permitting them to sit much lower than with outrigger frames and wood floor joists. Steel was chosen for its durability against hurricanes and high winds.

Secure modular offices were essential to house employment records and employee health documents. Each office is equipped with a fire and intrusion alarm system that is monitored from the main hospital and secure data and phone lines. Junction boxes and empty conduits were installed at the factory and the alarm, data and phone systems were installed once all of the modules were assembled. M Space took the necessary security measures to meet the client’s safety concerns and keep important documents confidential.
