Architectural Excellence : MJC is a fast-growing Landscaping Design Firm that quickly outgrew their 420sq.ft. office. We expanded the size of their operations by designing a 960 sq.ft. building. Hardi Stucco was installed on the exterior and skirting to upgrade their image. The interior floor plan was designed to address some major concerns for the customer. It was designed to limit traffic, offer privacy and the ability to conduct business with minimal disruption. A countertop and window with a speak-through mouse hole and pass through allowed field workers to hand in their paperwork without disrupting office personnel. Interior finishes consists of 1/2 “vinyl gypsum walls with extra insulation and carpeting. A suspended ceiling, recessed lights and extra J-boxes were added for the speaker system. Offices with sliders for easy communication and a conference area span the rear of the building. A kitchenette with upgraded cabinets, restroom and shower, and custom wood blinds give it a very classy look.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building was designed with a rubber-transverse roof with a 2’ overhang on each end to allow direct water flow through the aluminum downspouts. Commercial steel doors and double insulated windows will enhance the life expectancy of the building. Since the customer is planning to resell in the future, the quality of finishes was important. Vinyl gypsum walls with added insulation for sound deadening and energy efficiency, solid core doors for durability and upgraded oak cabinets in the kitchen are added features. Hardi stucco skirting was installed to prevent the pipes from freezing and gave the building a more permanent finished look. Double insulated windows, low static carpet and upgraded insulation in walls and ceiling provided a more efficient environment. Electric and plumbing connections posed a challenge so we worked closely with our customer to ensure that the placement of the building would be the most cost effective.

Technical Innovation : A major concern for the customer was creating a design that would allow privacy and improve efficiency in the operations. A window with sliding tray and speaker hole helped the situation by allowing the field workers to drop off paperwork without coming through the office and disrupting anyone. They also wanted to change their image to a more professional one as they were starting to work with more upscale customers. So in addition to the architectural upgrades already mentioned, some technical innovations were used to improve not only their look but their efficiency. A clear span roof truss was used to eliminate columns in the open areas and extra Junction Boxes were installed to provide a speaker system for interoffice communications.
