Milestones Middle School Addition
Additional Info
Award Winner : Accelerated Construction Technologies
Architectural Excellence : Layout & design was driven by incorporating classrooms for Middle School grades (7th & 8th) & shared specialty classrooms, gym/multipurpose, library, & warming kitchen into an existing Pre K – 6th grade campus. The theme was “separate, but together”. The solution was a complex footprint for the building within a tight site & a plan for interior & exterior student loading to keep the age ranges separate. Grades 7 & 8 have their own covered courtyard for entry, their own play area & drop off area. Specialty classrooms, library, & gym/multipurpose room are accessed from internal hallways since these are shared rooms. The exterior matches the existing buildings & the surrounding residential neighborhood, typical low maintenance Arizona stucco with tile roof accents. Interior is low maintenance for high commercial use with color & light used as architectural features. Due to tight budget, funding was spent in learning spaces first, with architecture being less important.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Arizona’s extreme summers require energy efficiency. All our facilities are steel with a 6” wall stud instead of a 4” stud gaining R-value. The EFIS exterior uses 1” insulation board for a net R-value of 25 for the wall system. Roof systems employ R30+ batt insulation & rigid foam insulation for increased R-value & sound control. Our electrical designs are 3-phase for minimal energy use. This includes energy efficient HVAC units that use scroll compressors & programmable thermostats. The energy-efficiency package includes 1” annealed, SOLEX dual glazing, tinted windows. Close tolerances minimize air infiltration into buildings.

Technical Innovation : Identical to traditional construction, this permanent high public use educational facility features slab-on-grade foundation with a combination of materials including EIFS, & tile roofs. The steel construction provides added strength & durability for many years of commercial high pubic use.
The Art room floor was finished with an epoxy finish so the students could use it as a canvas. It can be repainted as often as the students & teachers wish.
The gym interior walls have been protected with our own specially created finish method.
Since the gym is also a cafeteria & multipurpose room, the floor is a non-sports material, we lined in all the goal & foul lines so the typical sports could still be played.
Special sound absorbing panels were installed in the gym ceiling.
