Architectural Excellence : Mercy Hospital Joplin is a 150,000 sq ft state-of-the-art, two-story acute care component hospital made up of 224 structural steel components, all of which were constructed at our facility in So. California and transported to Joplin, MO on trains and massive semi-trailers. This steel and concrete structure features all of the amenities of a traditional-built hospital, including a full-scale emergency department, 4 operating rooms, 2 cath labs, three 2-story med-surg inpatient wings accommodating over 100 patients, an 18-bed ICU, a 12-bed pediatric department, nursery and 10 large LDRP rooms, plus a full lab, pharmacy, and a Radiology department that houses X-Ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, EP/PV, Pet, Litho, and NucMed equipment. While individual units were built, design tweaks and approvals, as well as construction on-site, all happened simultaneously. This synergy allowed the team to stay on pace for an on-time completion just prior to the one-year anniversary of the Joplin Tornado.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The facility was designed and built within 8 ½ months, almost a year and a half sooner than even the quickest traditional stick-built timelines, ultimately preventing millions of dollars in lost revenue to the customer. Instead of pouring traditional concrete flooring, cement board was incorporated, saving both on lengthy cure times and additional transportation charges due to its lighter weight. This interim modular facility is planned to remain in operation until the 900,000 sq ft permanent Mercy Hospital Joplin opens in 2015. At which point, the current hospital may be re-purposed or disconnected and transported to another site.

Technical Innovation : Noted as the quickest and largest acute care hospital to be constructed in the U.S, Mercy Hospital Joplin not only exceeds International Building Code requirements, but is also 30-percent stronger than the original, 9-story St. John’s Regional Medical Center that it replaced. The new hospital was designed to include specialized glass that is rated to withstand winds of 200 mph, as well as a number of “condition gray” safety zones in interior corridors where people can seek shelter in the event of an imminent threat. Wherever possible, green materials were woven into the design, including more than 140,000 sq ft of flooring containing a minimum 35% recycled content and high-efficiency lighting throughout. The exterior of the building is finished in Dryvit EFIS with stone accents.
