Architectural Excellence : The previous weigh station on I-10 west bound in Mississippi at the Louisiana line was knocked off its foundation several years ago in a vehicle accident. The architect, Rusty Perkins with MDOT, wanted to use the same slab so he designed a compact floor plan. Additionally, the building site is in an AE flood zone so the finished floor elevation needed to be at 48" above the grade. Modular was a perfect fit for speed and cost effective construction. The building is contemporary with corrugated steel siding, parapet wall and metal canopies from Nebraska. Since the building elevation is at 48" this allows for the officers manning the weigh station to see the truck drivers eye to eye. Typically, the officers sit lower than the truck cab. Again, because the building is on a permanent pier foundation, this extra benefit allows visual contact with the drivers. The interior is high end with sustainable finished features.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building is quite small so the cost is $ 563 per square foot. The smaller the square footage the greater the cost per square foot. The building is entirely steel construction; steel floor system, steel wall studs and steel roof with steps trusses and a 60 mil white rubber roof. All interior furnishings were expensive because this is a permanent modular building so nothing was spared to make it last. During the fabrication, Mr. Perkins and two MDOT officers and I visited the factory. They were so impressed by the precision in the factory and with their building which was in the final stages in the yard. The inspected every minute detail with the factory rep, Dean Long. They were thrilled with the workmanship. Today, the building holds two offices but other MDOT officers and State troopers will stop by for a break. Truck drivers will also come in for inspections and paperwork and they have their dedicated restroom, too. The building gets a lot of use.

Technical Innovation : Mr. Perkins investigated replacing the building and found that having to elevate the building was cost prohibitive. We worked with him on the foundation since he wanted to utilize the same foundation which was 8" higher than the concrete pavement. We epoxied into the slab to install rebar which ran up into the CMU cells. Then we poured a 4000 lb. cement into the cells and added a 3/8" x 6" x 8" weld plates with rebar on top of each pier. When the building was set, we welded the weld plates to the I beam frame. The building is a Level 3 bullet resistant structure with Armortex sheathing throughout; the windows (including the interior window) and doors are all bullet resistant. The cost alone for all of these specialty materials was nearly $ 50,000 to Southeast Modular Manufacturing, now known as ProMod Manufacturing. All lighting is LED, the interior walls are 5/8" Type "x" gypsum, Marlite FRP restroom walls and American Standard Max toilet (ad shows a bucket of balls easily flushing!).
