Architectural Excellence : Each of the four building exterior designs share the use of modulation to provide a look that defies the ability to tell the construction is modular. A mix of gable and single slope roof with various pitches and elevation changes are exceptionally pleasing and balance the proportion of each building design with the forest setting of this site. The interiors of each building incorporate the open learning concept with classrooms having windows into large common areas which allow large amounts of natural light to enter from the 23’ tall clerestory high window design. The Administration Gym support building wraps around two sides of the site constructed Gym and complements the Gym’s split face block exterior. The design incorporated the use of dual pane thermal clear glass roll up doors for easy access to outdoor areas for the Fitness center, 3D art classroom, and Native American Carving shop.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : All four buildings were designed to be permanent yet relocatable in full or in parts if the school demographics change. Cost savings resulted from no air conditioning. Operable windows were strategically placed to take advantage of cross ventilation. DDC controlled high efficiency gas fired furnaces were placed in each classroom to provide energy efficient heating, and overall building cost effectiveness. Low voltage lighting controls included daylight dimming capability to take advantage of the large amount of natural light utilized in the design. The owner received a large utility grant. The Administration Gym support building housed the Gym mechanical and the full service kitchen which opened up into the Gym, allowing the use of lower cost factory construction for typically high cost site built space. The owner estimates that the project saved 10 months of construction time and approximately 20% under site built cost.

Technical Innovation : Large volume common areas were accomplished by the use of 16’x72’ floor modules and similar sized roof modules that were combined to become 23’ tall clerestory open areas. This design required unique engineering that incorporated temporary roof covering on the floor modules that were weather sealed but also easy and safe to remove after the roof units were set in place. Unique floor to roof module connections were concealed and became appealing interior architectural features. The owners desire to have the solid feel and quiet sound provided by slab on grade floors was achieved by designing heavy floor joist and floor decking topped with cement board underlayment and combined with strategically located foundation footings and support walls. The heavy floor design allowed the utilization of scissor lifts not normally used in modular site installations for the completion of interior work.
