Award Winner : Falcon Structures

Architectural Excellence : Falcon Structures manufactured a two-story shipping container batch house for Martin Marietta to monitor truck traffic flowing in and out of their aggregate and concrete quarry. This structure replaced an old, tired travel trailer with a larger, more durable, and mobile solution. Three units were stacked into a two-story structure with a double-wide lower level and a single office on top. The upper level is accessible by an external staircase and functions as a private office for the plant manager to monitor the quarry below. The lower level is an open breakroom area that houses a bathroom and kitchenette for drivers waiting for their trucks to be loaded with aggregate material.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The shipping containers used for the Batch House were manufactured off-site in a controlled environment, allowing site preparation to happen simultaneously. This shortened the project schedule allowed Martin Marietta to use their structure sooner, helping them increase their bandwidth. The delivery process and on-site set up were completed in under a day thanks to the modularity of the shipping containers. When the time comes to relocate the structure, transportation and setup will be just as simple. The ability to relocate the structure helps Martin Marietta save additional money by eliminating the construction of additional Batch Houses. Instead, they can reuse the same structure at future locations for many years to come.

Technical Innovation : The design of the Batch House and the use of repurposed shipping containers allows the structure to be portable, durable, functional for multiple purposes, and small enough to sit near the quarry. Most importantly, it creates an elevated point of view for the plant manager and allows both the plant manager and the truck drivers to have separate spaces. The separation allows the plant manager to hold private meetings and house expensive equipment, and the truck drivers can feel comfortable in an unmonitored space. A new and innovative cross over electrical system was built into the containers to connect the units more intuitively, saving Martin Marietta time during set up. This structure is at an elevated height, it’s durable for the industry, and it can be easily detached and loaded on to a truck for relocation in the future. Not only did this configuration meet the challenges Martin Marietta faced, but it also inspired other aggregate companies to replicate the structure.
