Architectural Excellence : The Makah Indian Tribe is situated on the northwestern most point of the continental United States, located adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. The federal government was concerned about the tribe being devastated by a potential tsunami and authorized the tribe to construct several critical service facilities on higher ground, including this new 8712 sqft healthcare facility. Because the tribe is located in the United States’ only rainforest, the exterior of this structure was designed to withstand 100 mph Exposure C wind conditions and an average of 100” of rain per year (equivalent to the Amazon rainforest). The roof was designed with a standing-seam, 3 to 12 pitch metal roof with 24” eaves, painted board and batt concrete siding, vinyl insulated windows and storefront exterior doors. The interior featured cherry-stained, wood, solid-core doors and window trims, T-grid ceilings with recessed lighting, carpet-tiles and vinyl flooring.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This single-story building utilized a wide range of environmentally friendly, energy-saving features such as electric heat-pumps, insulated low-E windows (36 U-Value), insulated exterior doors, building wrapping, motion sensors for fluorescent lighting, plus other automated occupancy sensors. The carpet tiles are an environmentally sustainable product with very little waste. The construction process also used a number of standardized building materials when possible, for superior efficiency and cost effectiveness (wood sheathing, wood decking, sheetrock interior walls, etc). The recycling program achieved greater sustainability by limiting waste materials and the reuse of recycled materials in floors, ceilings, siding and insulation.

Technical Innovation : Due to the building being delivered in the peak of the rainy season, the building was designed with a temporary weather-tight roof to protect the modules from water damage during the installation. The permanent roof utilized a panelized, tilt-up roof system, whereby each module had the peak of the roof folded-over for erection on site. The eight man crew craned, lifted and pivoted the roof system into place, completing the weathering-in of the roof in three days, with another four days to install the 24-gauge roofing panels. The building utilized high-performance carpet tiles featuring a mold and bacteria inhibitor built-in to the fabric, along with a moisture barrier on the back of the carpet, preventing moisture from passing through to the wood floor decking. The building also had five aroma-therapy treatment rooms with specialized air supply and venting from each room, including gaskets around the doors.
