Architectural Excellence : Louisa County High School desperately needed a temporary cafeteria to replace its previously destroyed building. After a magnitude-5.8 earthquake left its campus and dining hall unusable, the school sought a modular building solution to quickly accommodate displaced students, staff and teachers. In just two months, M SPACE provided a 7,616 square foot cafeteria, configured from eight new modules. Conveniently placed in a central location near restroom facilities, the cafeteria was equipped with an office and a fully operational kitchen including stoves, dishwashers, sinks, counters and a prep line. The building accommodates 200 students at a time and features vinyl composition tile flooring for its ease of maintenance and stain resistance. Decks were installed off the back of the cafeteria to house freezers and coolers. Additionally, the exterior paint was chosen to match the surrounding campus.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The new cafeteria was designed, built and installed using modular construction in a fraction of the time it would have taken for traditional construction, thereby saving the client money. The cafeteria took just two months for completion, offering a safe and convenient temporary dining hall. Its short time frame allowed students and staff to remain on campus, rather than traveling off campus for meals. Seven-day programmable thermostats and exterior lights with photocells were installed to help reduce electric costs. Additionally, the building utilizes ABS pads over asphalt to save money on the footings and enable future relocatability.

Technical Innovation : The cafeteria is equipped with five 220/240 outlets, ten 110/120 dedicated circuits and ten 110/120 volt waterproof floor receptacles to accommodate the kitchen equipment. Dishwashers are equipped with a commercial hot water heater for energy efficiency and stoves contain self-extinguishing range hoods. The cafeteria can withstand 130 mph winds and a heavier floor load of 100 psf was used to effectively hold kitchen equipment, vending and ice machines and the constant flow of students. The food prep area is equipped with seamless flooring, welded on-site, to meet health department sanitary guidelines. The ceiling and walls were designed with a two-hour fire rating, which eliminated the need for a sprinkler system. Noise buffering material was also added in ceilings to reduce noise disruptions from the cafeteria to nearby classrooms. The HVAC System was equipped with smoke detector shut down devices, allowing the units to quickly shut down if smoke is detected in the vents.
