Los Angeles Music Center Upstage Burger

This was designed as a permanent structure and met all building code requirements. We received permission from the local authority to use a 3rd party inspector in our factory. Welding certifications were also required. Ikoniq_186982832E.jpg Ikoniq_186982832-exteriordeck.jpg Ikoniq_186982832-exterior crane.jpg Ikoniq_186982832-stack.png Ikoniq_186982832V.jpg

Architectural Excellence : Over 50 years ago, the Music Center made the world recognize LA as a cultural hub. Previously, home of the Academy Awards and the LA Philharmonic. The design of the Upstage Burger Restaurant needed to respect the architectural significance, yet deliver an improved food and beverage experience to patrons. The project could not disrupt regularly scheduled events. The first impression is that the structure doesn’t compete with the pavillions iconic marble exterior. The exterior Fiber Cement Wall Panels with hints of color, are modern yet integrate in a subtle way. The unit was completely constructed off-site of steel with zero combustibles, to meet the strict site requirements. It was Crane set on a parking garage roof/mezzanine with waterproofing requirements for all penetrations. It is comprised of 2 modules, the first story with complete commercial kitchen including vent hoods with Ansul system and the second housing all HVAC, Make-up and signage support.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The structure is located on a mezzanine approximately 40' above street level, accessible by a staircase only. Construction utilizing tradition methods would have been impractical. Fabricating the building off site, and installing it over a very short period ( weeks ) allowed the facility to stay in operation with very little disruption. Road closures were only required for a short period between midnight and 6:00 AM. Finishing work on site took place when the facility was not in operation. Like many of our projects, many commented that the appearance of the new building seemed to occur overnight.

Green Building Description : The design of the exterior siding employs an air gap between the exterior siding panels and the building. As the panels warm from solar gain, natural convective cooling occurs and limits the solar gain of the isolated and insulated building shell. Significant thermal load is also added to the building from cooking operations. The vent hood provides rapid air changes in the structure, but would rapidly overwhelm the HVAC system as warm make up air enters the building. An evaporative cooler or swamp cooler is employed. Evaporative coolers use much less energy than air conditioners, and are very effective in the dry LA environment.

Technical Innovation : A template was employed to pre-drill and set 50 shallow stainless anchors in the deck so the building could be lowered over the anchors when delivered. Plumbing, electric, structural interfaces between the site and modules, were completed as structures were being positioned. Exterior Fibre Cement panels were attached in the factory, numbered and removed for shipping and re-attached on site after modules were assembled. Kitchen equipment was pre-installed and shipped in place to minimze the time disruption after delivery. The base of the steel frame was hot dipped galvanized, to guarantee the terazzo on site would not be stained by rust. Combustable materials were forbidden and suitable alternatives needed to be deployed
