Architectural Excellence : When a major grocery retailer launched a new pilot program to initiate “shop online and pick-up” at various locations within the city, they looked at modular construction as an effective way to drop pick up depots in place quickly and effectively. The single section building had to be simple and vandal resistant yet attractive to suit the launch and marketing initiatives associated with the pilot program. The first location was to be at a busy “GO” commuter train station where passengers could order their goods on line and pick them up as they exited the train on the way to their cars. Red exterior flat wall panels were chosen to support graphics and a simple clean appearance that would be eye-catching as patrons walked by. The online pick-up program has generated huge interest and is growing in popularity. Future sites will be added as the program reaches out to other stations and other locations throughout the region.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Because the building was constructed in one module to suit the maximum shipping width, the building was able to be completed to 100% prior to shipping, including the canopy and concrete landing area under the canopy. Site installation was one day, and building only required connection to power to finalize.

Project Location City : Mississauga

Project Location State Name : Ontario

Technical Innovation : The building is constructed with a structural steel frame and includes a concrete floor replacing a typical slab on grade. The existing concrete sidewalk was cut, concrete piers added below grade and the modular building set into the sidewalk to eliminate any requirements for ramps or stairs. The exterior of the building is kept simple and vandal resistant, while the interior of the building is functional, bright and easy to maintain. Wire shelving for dry goods and stand-up freezers and coolers for food storage have been integrated. An exterior manual sliding pick-up window was added for ease of pick-up as well as security. The building was constructed to Ontario’s Handicap Accessibility codes and includes an exterior door operator as well as an accessible washroom with push button operator.
