Cost Energy Effectiveness : This building incorporated a number of cost saving features that made the modular solution the most cost effective approach to solving the school’s additional space need. Re-purposing and relocating an existing modular building from one school that had completed their major renovations to a new school just starting renovations afforded the owner the flexibility needed to provide a usable facility in multiple locations without requiring to budget for all new construction.

Offsite construction of the modular units allowed the new building to be erected in record time. Students and teachers were not displaced and no costs were incurred for space to relocate them to during its construction. Students left school in late June and returned to school in August to a brand new 2 story building with additional space, amenities and resources.

Architectural Excellence : Leckie Elementary is a self-contained school complete with classrooms, cafeteria, kitchen, library/resource room, offices, conference room, faculty and student restrooms, automatic sprinklers and fire alarm. A two story design was chosen as land was limited.

Each floor is designed with rooms on either side of a central corridor with entrance/exit doors at each end. The modules run perpendicular to the corridor. The main entrance opens to a vestibule and lower stair module. The second floor is accessed by a fully enclosed, interior modular stair with an electric chairlift for the physically challenged. Rear exits are served by exterior stairs and landings intended as emergency exits. The building is connected to an adjacent modular building by covered walkways.
The exterior is painted Dura Temp wood siding with painted wood trim and the roof is Mule-Hide black EPDM. The interior has vinyl covered gypsum walls, welded seam vinyl flooring, vinyl composition tile, carpet, and acoustical ceiling tile.

Green Building Description : This facility is not applicable for a Green Building.

Technical Innovation : All onsite construction was limited to the school’s summer break. This (12) unit modular building was disassembled by crane and transported from another school location while foundations and utilities were installed at the Leckie site. The 12 unit modular building was then erected by crane in its place within seven weeks. The 10 main modules and 2 stair modules were constructed at Williams Scotsman’s affiliate factory in Ephrata PA.
