Additional Info

Award Winner : Hawaii Modular Space, an operation of Williams Scotsman, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : In six years Le Jardin Academy almost doubled its enrollment going from 400 to 750 students. Private schools in Hawaii have been popular for years, drawing more than 30,000 students in recent years. The Hawaii community is hungry for educational alternatives, even if the whole family has to chip in to pay for tuition that ranges from $8,000 to more than $12,000 annually. As a result of the increased enrollment, Le Jardin Academy was running out of space. Hawaii Modular Space provided (2) 24x60 classroom buildings. Each 24x60 building has two 24x30 classrooms for a total of (4) classrooms. Classrooms were furnished with storage closets with shelves, VCT flooring, Vinyl Wrap Sheet rock wall covering, (6) sliding windows and wall hung HVAC. It was important to the Board of Directors that the modular buildings blend in with the existing campus profile and architecture. The design included Hardipanel T1-11 exterior siding and a standing seam metal roof to match their existing campus.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Le Jardin Academy will be building a multilevel new high school building and gymnasium but until those plans are complete, they came to Hawaii Modular Space for temporary classroom buildings to accommodate their increase in student enrollment. Hawaii Modular proved that modular construction was the fastest and most economical solution to providing quality built classrooms. During the design process it was important to provide the most economical specifications such as windows with dual glaze and solar bronze tint to meet Hawaii Energy Efficiency standards, wall mount HVAC units, vinyl composition tile flooring and Hardipanel siding which the termites don’t like. We saved Le Jardin Academy time and money pleasing the board of directors and parents alike.

Technical Innovation : The challenge was the site. Normally, a pair of buildings sitting side by side on the same site would be set at the same finish floor level. The only site space available to set these buildings was on a parking lot with an overall slope of more than 6’-0”. This would have resulted in one of the classroom buildings being set so high in the air that a cost effective foundation system would not be possible. To avoid constructing a costly foundation system the buildings were set at staggered heights thus keeping installation costs to a minimum.
