Langley Montessori
Additional Info
Award Winner : Metric Modular
Architectural Excellence : This facility was designed with a low profile and grade level entry for placement on an irregularly shaped lot. To meet architectural guidelines for a designated “Heritage Area”, the exterior siding and detailed facade complements an existing early 1900’s school building next door and all materials and finishes were selected to blend in with the historic neighbourhood.
Designed with four separate childcare areas, the centre provides distinct learning environments for infants, toddlers and preschool children 3 to 5 years old. The interior includes extensive custom millwork and a heated crawlspace keeps the floor warm for the children’s floor activities. Large windows and door lites maximize natural light and provide a bright and positive environment.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Three zones with programmable thermostats are heated by packaged rooftop natural gas heat units with air conditioning and the heated crawlspace is fully ventilated. The rooftop units incorporate an upgraded pressure package with economizers.

Technical Innovation : As the property is situated on a flood plain, an extensive storm water management plan with alarmed sumps and french drains, consisting of pipes buried in rock-filled trenches, were installed to handle the surface runoff.
The building is fully sprinklered with a monitored, ULC rated fire alarm and was designed with the latest rainscreen technology to ensure dry, breathable walls and eliminate the prospect of mold and mildew.
