Architectural Excellence : The La Almenara Housing Project was built to support the needs of the community of Pittsburg, CA, for low income housing. The construction consists of 20 apartments total and a fitness center/office. Sixteen of the apartments are two bedrooms and two baths, and four of the apartments are three bedrooms with two baths. Modular building construction was chosen by the city for the speed, accuracy, and energy efficiency built into the units. This was a design build effort by a team including, the typical cast of characters, in addition to the city stakeholders. The housing modules were set and sealed in 40 days, and the project's total timeline was nine months from design start to completion of the final construction. Residents were moving in within 48 hours of the Certificate of Occupancy approval. The exterior is stucco with a myriad of colors separating the living units. The sense of community achieved with this city production has been very successful.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The City of Pittsburg advised that La Almenara was much less expensive to complete than a smaller site built project being built concurrently. La Almenara started after and was completed and occupied sooner than the smaller site built project. This is just another testament to the benefits of modular construction.

Technical Innovation : The assembly of the units reduced production time due to the reproducibility of the similar floor plans. This factor alone helped maintain the production rhythm needed to build a volume of floors with speed and accuracy. The units were 90 percent complete when they arrived on-site so this condensed the timeline on-site, easing the finish out process in a difficult urban situation. The roof system was a combination of plant installed and site installed truss kits with installation of the Spanish tiles adorning the overall façade and enriching the glamour of the housing units.
