Architectural Excellence : When King’s Christian School’s high school enrollment doubled for 2008, they needed a large education building in a very short period of time. As they had a positive experience with Vanguard Modular Building Systems in 2007 in the purchase of three doublewide classrooms and in light of this imposing time crunch, they decided to have the entire building modular versus site built like their existing school.
This private school was designed for upper & middle school students. It consists of nineteen classrooms, staff offices, reception room, conference areas, break room and health room. These areas border an attractive courtyard area in the center. Two of the large, open areas were furnished with site installed partitions which allows for flexibility as the needs of the school change. For uniformity, Hardie panel siding was finished in the same color scheme as the existing school buildings. Pine and hardwood trees surround the school placing it in a very pleasant, quiet environment.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Each classroom and all accessory areas were kit out with plenum walls at the HVAC unit with ducted supply and return air; this provides appropriate air circulation and ensures quiet operation. Each HVAC unit is controlled by a programmable thermostat in order to allow pre-determined settings during daily building use and for weekends and vacation dates.
All ballasts in the fluorescent lighting are electronic, thereby both increasing energy efficiency and lowering operating costs. The insulation values of the school are R-11 for floor, R-11 for sidewalls, R-19 for roof, and R-11 for interior walls. As most buildings have only exterior wall insulation, this will aid in energy conservation. Interior wall insulation also helps with sound dampening.
The entire process only took four months and the school was able to open successfully on time on August 11th.

Technical Innovation : In order to accommodate for the challenges of this project presented by Fulton County restrictions and the many trees that enhanced this site, the building was designed with a versatile, U shaped floor plan. When the school is ready for growth, this building has been engineered to allow for expansion from three of the four corridor exits. This design ensures that classroom window views will not be obscured by new construction. The shape of the building also ensures that exterior equipment will continue to be serviceable.
The entire school has been equipped with a state of the art fire sprinkler system. In addition, this system can easily grow with the building in order to prevent future code issues.
To quote King’s Ridge Headmaster, C.D. Rhoades, “Innovative ideas and flexibility in adjusting the floor plans resulted in an incredible academic building.”
