Additional Info

Award Winner : Blazer Industries, Inc.

Architectural Excellence : This building was designed to provide shelter for a pumping station serving a new housing development of upscale homes. The building materials used including the colored split face CMU block and metal standing seam roof were selected to provide a pleasing exterior look while being low maintenance for the City of Auburn Public Works Department.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Energy efficiency was not part of the design criteria as this is an uninhabited equipment shelter with minimal heating requirements for freeze protection. By having Blazer Industries build the building the pump supplier was able to provide a complete system to the general contractor with all of the equipment installed and the power and control systems complete from the factory, this saved the general contractor the time and expense of managing the multiple subs required to build the pumping station on site and avoided the problems with weather delays and theft of materials from the site.

Technical Innovation : We designed this building in an “L” shape with one leg housing all the pumps and the motor control center and the other leg housing the back-up generator. We did this to isolate the generator room for sound reasons. One of the requirements for the building was that you would not be able to hear the generator running if you were outside of the building. This was accomplished through the use of mass in the walls, sound insulation, special STC 52 sound rated doors and a very extensive sound attenuation system for the supply air and exhaust penetrations in the building exterior walls. The roof in the pump leg of the building was designed with removable hatches over each pump so the pumps could be easily accessed and replaced as needed and the pump skid and motor control center were elevated on concrete platforms to protect them from any water that might leak from the pumps.
