Architectural Excellence : Charter school expansion is rampant in many parts of our nation, and at Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy things are no different. The expansion-needs schools have often supersede the timeframe in which a new site-constructed building can be ready. This was the exact scenario Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy faced. They were building a large school building, but needed 27,500+ sq. ft. of temporary classroom space to accommodate students until the new school building was ready. Manufacturing of the temporary modular buildings began in early June and the school had an occupancy permit at the end of August, in time for the start of school. Only 78 days to get two new classroom wings, an administrative office building, and a cafeteria built and installed. This school was under tremendous pressure because getting the property lease in place pushed back their construction schedule. Fortunately, off-site construction can deliver a lot of space in a short amount of time.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : There was no site-built alternative to temporary modular buildings for this project, because the project schedule was so tight. Off-site construction created an effective solution for the school, because they can operate, even while their permanent building is under construction. Building the temporary 12 module classroom wings, 4 unit cafeteria, and doublewide administrative office as standalone structures is a cost effective approach to creating an entire school campus. The school had the flexibility to create a campus layout that suits their needs, rather than a single building that may not adhere exactly to their desired land footprint.

Technical Innovation : These buildings are temporarily on lease until the school is able to move into their new school building. When that time comes, the temporary classrooms, office, and cafeteria will be removed from the site and delivered to another school for similar or repurposed uses. Reuse of building space is not only eco-friendly, supporting sustainability efforts; it also creates opportunity for other schools to affordably purchase or lease the used modular structures, rather than new.
