Architectural Excellence : A regional trauma center required an extension to their Emergency Department (ED) constructed quickly; with minimum disruption on site to support its rapid growth. Permanent quality construction was required to connect to its existing building on their campus and meet the company’s immediate initiative. Modular Genius provided a complete turnkey single story modular building addition; which houses treatment rooms, nurse stations, a registration/wait area, restrooms, and clean/soiled supply rooms. Modular Genius’ services included design, engineering, project management, permits, site work, foundations, utility work, new building construction, fire protection, finishes and more. The building is comprised of twelve non-combustible modules varying in size; with the floor of the new modular extension aligned with the existing ground floor level. Existing building utilities were connected to the new extension from the existing basement level and from above the existing ground floor ceiling.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The site was so severely restricted, that if conventional construction was used, it would have hindered the hospital’s emergency room functions greatly. It would have essentially shut down half of their ED during construction. Using modular construction greatly reduced the time the ED was affected by construction disturbances; from months down to only about 2 weekends during the module crane installations. As a means of simplifying and expediting the construction delivery process, the project team also chose modular construction and built as much of the project construction in the manufacturing plant as possible. Prior to delivery of the building modules, the modular building process provided rough-ins in the manufacturing plant for sanitary and domestic plumbing, electric, HVAC, fire protection, med-gases, and pneumatic tube system that was tied into the existing hospital.

Technical Innovation : Modular Construction was the ideal solution for this addition; taking advantage of concurrent construction speed, marginal site disturbance and minimal material laydown. This particular modular building design afforded the end-user an immediate permanent solution and the ability to install the building quickly and safely in a tight metropolitan site location with heavy foot & vehicle traffic. A perimeter foundation wall, with intermediate piers and a below grade crawlspace was constructed below the modular addition to allow for an at grade entrance and for the floors of both connecting buildings to align; as well as, to allow for building systems and utilities to tie back into the existing building basement level mechanical rooms. Each module was precisely crane set into place, securely welded to steel weld plates within the foundation and structurally lagged at the wall, floor and roof sections. Then; a link was designed and built to connect both building together seamlessly.
