Technical Innovation : Satellite Shelters worked with the KC Pet Project medical staff, general contractor, equipment suppliers and modular building construction crews to provide technical innovation for this project which transformed a wide open conference-swing space modular building into a multi-room full functioning veterinary care center. The original construction included suspended ceilings which allowed mechanical additions and re-routing of supply and return air. The removal of one restroom provided the additional space for the prep area but saved money since existing plumbing wall, lines and supply could be used. Plumbing and carpentry were added for the new exam and lab rooms which included a counter sink and a floor mop sink. The surgery room includes an Eilason swing door and fixed window for viewing from the prep area; all surgery and medical rooms include Tell Manufacturing solid core half lite kits so that staff can easily check on kenneled animals without disturbing the special occupants.

Green Building Description : With no city funding, the KC Pet Project depended on a capital grant and generous donations to finance this project. They came to Satellite Shelters for a cost-effective option to maximize every dollar they had to spend to upgrade their inadequate existing clinic. The 2009 doublewide not only gave them the necessary Missouri seal for local codes but gave them a modular building that allowed them to put their small budget funds into upgrades and additions rather than into demolition. Their space plan required a surgery suite for two doctors who could perform surgeries at the same time, five surgery recovery rooms for animals requiring special medical attention, along with an exam, lab and prep areas. The removal of one restroom saved money by utilizing existing plumbing for the prep area. Satellite Shelters was also able to provide them with two bonus space areas that they didn’t think would be possible with their limited budget: a staff restroom and a small visitor entry for public.

Architectural Excellence : Nestled into a space next to a 10,000 square foot facility built in 1972, the modular building site is accessible to the staff, volunteers and the general public looking to adopt a pet. Kansas City Pet Project worked many hours coming up with a floor plan utilizing every square foot possible while maximizing space inside each of the rooms. Construction included a surgery suite and five kennel rooms, along with a lab, prep and exam room. The open floor plan allowed construction crews to be precise in wall placement while utilizing every inch of floor space to accommodate the specialized equipment and animal kennels. From the installation of commercial grade, seamless-low maintenance flooring, cabinetry and animal kennels to the additional electrical which included dedicated outlets for the clinic equipment, lighting for each room which would also met the special lighting requirements for exam, lab and surgery and to finally provide a clean, safe space for animal recovery.
