Architectural Excellence : This 27,000 square foot office boasts a range of finishing options, architectural features and material options that change the look, feel and functionality of spaces within the office areas. The building houses 104 employee work stations (37 cubicles and 67 offices), 6 boardrooms, 5 washrooms, 2 employee showers, lunch room and open concept lounge area. Both vinyl and painted wall surfaces are used throughout the building as well as a combination of tile, vinyl and carpet flooring. The twenty foot vaulted ceiling of the 650 square foot site built entrance blends seamlessly with the 35 12’ x 60’ modules to create a comfortable, modern office space. The exterior combines metal siding and cement board panels with natural elements of stone and wood which help to blend into the 1 acre fully landscaped perimeter.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Many of the environmentally conscious aspects of the building’s design also reduce the day-to-day operating expenses. LED light fixtures used throughout the building provide superior longevity, reduce maintenance costs, and minimize energy costs while motion sensors ensure electricity is not wasted in unused areas. Eight economized roof top units promote power savings for both heating and cooling. White PVC roof minimizes heat island effect as well as keeping the building cooler to improve employee comfort and reduce cooling costs. “Low E” windows used for front façade and store front to promote energy savings and climate comfort inside the building. The building modules were constructed at the adjacent manufacturing facility and hauled direct to site which reduced storage and trucking costs. Local site works & installation crews were used which reduced travel costs and time needed to install.

Technical Innovation : Situated on traditional First Nations land, the building illustrates Horizon North’s relationship with the local Band as well as the importance of building strong, long lasting relationships with Aboriginal groups. Several energy efficient and environmentally conscious aspects were incorporated into the building’s design to reduce long term environmental impact. Recycled asphalt was used to pave the 118 stall parking lot which uses a site managed storm drain system. Power smart appliances, bottle-free water filtration, low flow toilets, waterless urinals, touch free hand dryers and faucets, water based paints and water based adhesives were all used to promote environmental stewardship.
