Architectural Excellence : The one storey building layout consists of an accommodation wing and shared facilities in the other wing. A control gate between the two wings is created by the reception and offices providing safety to program providers and participants. The program consists of eight secure bedrooms and washrooms, offices, reception, cultural ceremony room and a large communal living and dining area. The exterior façade is clad with painted fiber cement boards and features a rhythmic vertical banding of alternating colours that adds to a contemporary aesthetic.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The Child Wellness building modules were manufactured at the dormant Kainai Manufacturing Facility. ATCO’s project team was augmented by the Human Resources personnel and all the production workers were hired from the community. Some specialty work was sub-contracted to the community-owned companies. During the 3 month construction period ATCO managed all aspects of the off-site construction and by using local labour were able to effectively control project costs while offering local employment. Pitched truss roofs were pre-built in the shop as well. The units were transported to site, offloaded and put onto foundations by crane.

Green Building Description : The primary building material of the project is wood, contributing to a smaller carbon footprint, less air and water pollution and reduction of embodied energy. Operable windows, careful selection of materials, paints and finishes with low VOC emissions and the decentralized heating and cooling are the factors contributing to the high thermal comfort and excellent indoor air quality. Acoustical Ceiling Materials: Interior acoustical ceilings tiles are made from the recycled byproducts of industrial processes and post-consumer materials that would otherwise end up in a
landfill. They contain more than 80% recycled content and enhance room acoustics.
