ISMT Modular Training Facility
Additional Info
Award Winner : Icon Construction, Inc.
Architectural Excellence : One modular building's 5 floors make up 4,375 sf. of the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Training (ISMT) facility for the USMC. This modular facility was the first of its kind. The mission to be carried out had not been attempted in a modular building. Icon’s solution was a major success. The facilities are vital in preparing Marines and recruits for the instruction of using weapons in combat situations. The training involves simulating stress, using virtual reality and computers to create realistic indoor and outdoor situations. ISMT creates extreme temperatures, various terrains and presents environmental challenges of a combat area. The Marines' mission is to improve war fighting effectiveness before deployment. The facility was divided into 2 ISMT classrooms which have 3 firing lanes in each room. The building came equipped with two 80 gallon 7.5 horsepower air compressors, which are noise insulated in an operator room, as well as built-in projector screens and weapon storage space.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Icon Construction’s modular buildings meet or exceed all current energy codes. Sustainability begins with Icon’s centrally located U.S. manufacturing plant. The 65,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility utilizes an abundance of natural lighting and other energy saving technologies. Materials utilized in Icon modular buildings include recycled steel, recycled carpet, recycled lumber, LED lighting and double-paned low-E windows as well as various other products. In addition, unused materials are recycled. Icon Construction’s modular manufacturing process allows us to provide a cost-effective modular building solution by managing time spent on construction and by controlling other factors like labor and material costs.

Technical Innovation : This project contained three major challenges that had to be overcome. Two 47 ft. x 9 ft. projection screens were required for proper marksmanship simulation. These screens were hand floated on site, crossing 4 mate lines without imperfection. The screen walls were then painted with a glass bead paint to allow for proper image clarity. The project also required a site built false floor, sturdy enough to support the weight of six 200 pound Marines, each carrying a simulated battle load and training devices. Further, the building contains an air compressor, the noise from which had to be contained within the compressor room, as the noise of an air compressor powering up and powering down distracts from the quality of the training.
