Architectural Excellence : Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization (CAO) was in need of a temporary medical center to use during the construction of a hospital/medical center in Ironton, Ohio. M Space worked with the CAO to design a 5,376 sq. ft. temporary facility. The building features exam rooms, physicians’ offices, a medical records room, a waiting area and a lounge. Although the facility is temporary, it was designed to have the look and feel of a permanent building. To give this building a permanent look, GenStone® panels were used for the skirting. These panels give the appearance of a stacked stone foundation. Inside the facility, carpet tiles were used. The tiles eliminate the presence of the mate-line and can be easily removed and replaced during the transport of the building to its next location. Once the hospital in Ironton is complete, the modular building will be moved to another CAO location in Proctorville.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : This project was part of the federally funded Rural Health Initiative. Because of this, it needed to meet specific government requirements, including heating and cooling equipment with a SEER rating of 13. Gas furnaces and electric heat pumps were installed and successfully met the SEER rating. In addition to saving money with the energy efficient features of the building, the CAO also saved money by using the medical center at two locations. Instead of leasing a temporary building and then purchasing a permanent facility for Proctorville, one building was designed to do both. This also reduced the impact on the environment. Since only one building was needed, the use of materials and energy that are required for a new building was avoided. M Space also recommended using aluminum decks, ramps and stairs. Unlike wood fixtures, which need to be discarded after one use, aluminum fixtures can easily be removed and reused at the next building location.

Technical Innovation : The building was designed for two additional dental clinic modules to be added when the building is relocated to Proctorville and engineered to fit on both a temporary and permanent foundation. The facility will serve as a family medical center and dental clinic at its next location. During factory construction an anti-scald plumbing system was installed, which has a centrally located valve that accurately maintains the water temperature and never allows it to get hot enough to scald. By maintaining a specific hot water temperature the system increases the amount of available hot water allowing the medical center to never run out.
