Architectural Excellence : The Invisible Wounds Clinic (IWC) is a 24-module, 18,348 SF modular building designed & built for the US Air Force. The IWC has an environmentally-sensitive & sustainable design with state-of-the-art technologies that enable functionality, comfort, & exceptional comprehensive healthcare. The facility supports various departments including Physical, Occupational & Speech Therapy for injured military personnel. The building floor plan includes waiting/lobby area, behavioral health data portal kiosk, patient check-in, offices, conference rooms, screening rooms, exam rooms, treatment rooms, medication room, therapy rooms, bathrooms/showers/locker rooms, demonstration kitchen, dayroom, copy/office supply room, staff lounge area, clean/soiled utility rooms, comm rooms, electrical rooms, and storage. Aesthetics of the building incorporated an efficient, attractive & healing environment & landscape. Exterior architecture of facility mirrors the recently renovated 300-bed hospital on same site.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The design & performance requirements of the Invisible Wounds Clinic presented MMG with the challenge to maintain cost effectiveness. The most obvious cost benefit to MMG’s solution was to fabricate the building within the highly-efficient environment of a modular building factory. MMG also elected to limit the scope of the factory for the project. This allowed the factory to focus on what they do best & not be consumed with the time & energy required to execute the unusually expensive interior & exterior finishes. Modular Building factories are often most efficient when executing floor wall & roof systems, which they build several times per year. Allowing them to do what they do best actually increases the thru-put at the factory, ultimately making them more cost effective. This project utilized the highly developed structural, electrical & mechanical know-how of the factory with the use of highly-skilled quality craftsman in the field to create an elegant & cost-effective facility.

Green Building Description : The design of the IWC was to meet that of a “World-Class Medical Facility.” MMG incorporated enduring & timeless materials to create an environmentally-sensitive and sustainable design. The goal was to have a building that would optimize functional adjacencies for ease of operations & efficiency, enhance access to services, reduce the risk of medical errors, enhance the patient caregiver safety & communication, and provide an efficient, attractive & healing environment. The enhanced & modernized design allows for future adaptability & expansion including new technologies and/or services within the space, and within existing structural components. The building envelope, finish materials, and mechanical systems are all capable of being certified as a LEED Silver project. Through our creativity, innovation and best practices we were able to provide a well-executed modular building that easily and economically adapts to changing practices, technologies and fluctuating operational demands.

Technical Innovation : The Invisible Wounds Clinic (IWC) presented Modular Management Group, Inc. (MMG) with several opportunities for innovation and sustainability. Regarding innovation, MMG made a decision to execute 100% of the building finishes in the field. The client requested a level 5 interior finish on walls and several ceilings, ceramic floor and wall coverings as well as complex inlays. We often attempt to create modular solutions that are 95% complete out of the factory. However, this building was only 60% complete out of the factory. All the major mechanical and electrical systems, the factory executed and completed in the field.

The building envelope, finish materials and mechanical systems are all capable of being certified as a LEED Silver Project. MMG is proud to have created an environment where active military personnel can get the physical, psychological and emotional rehabilitation that they need and deserve.
