Architectural Excellence : The mission of the Mennonite College of Nursing (MCN) at Illinois State University is to provide a quality education for professional nurses. Mobilease Modular Space and Mobile/Modular Express II, working in cooperation with the ISU Facilities team and DLR Group architects, have built a 9,600 SF Nursing Simulation Laboratory for the MCN. The building design has successfully incorporated a working hospital environment into a university instructional laboratory. The new facility is a state-of-the-art learning center where students come to develop the skills they will use in clinical practice. It includes (4) skills and assessment classrooms, (4) patient simulation areas, (20) patient exam rooms and staff offices. The modern building exterior design includes both Kawneer aluminum framed, fixed glass windows and exterior doors and 3-color, Hardipanel® exterior siding. The beautiful interior elevations include a Commons with an art gallery and study area for student collaboration.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : At the grand opening of the new laboratory Dean Janet Krejci told invitees that “After a year of intense and careful planning, we now have a world class laboratory in which to prepare our students.” The ISU Facilities team established budget goals for the project that included 50% lower square footage costs and 67% less time for design and construction when compared to conventional methods. The MCN staff was amazed at the rapid and precise installation of the modular units. All construction work was completed in (2) months. Significant focus was placed on energy efficiency. The building includes 2” x 6” exterior walls with R-22 insulation and high U-factor exterior glass with vertical shades. Each Trane 15 SEER, Energy Star roof top unit includes a stand-alone microprocessor-based controller with resident logic and economizer. Carbon dioxide sensors and low VOC paint assure excellent air quality for building occupants. Substantial savings have been achieved in annual utility costs.

Technical Innovation : Healthcare in the US is becoming more complex. There are critical nursing shortages. Most colleges are using outdated instructional methods. The MCN Nursing Simulation Lab includes up-to-date equipment where top clinical simulation experts can provide training in a virtual hospital environment with high fidelity patient simulators and the latest technology. Patient simulations are as close to real-world nursing interactions as possible. They address a wide variety of acute and general care nursing scenarios. Labs are set up to mirror hospital nursing stations and patient rooms as well as doctor’s offices with exam rooms. There are two-way mirrors and video capture capabilities to allow for real-time feedback to students. Precision was required in the fabrication of the structure as (248) LF of custom casework was field-installed at (16) locations. High quality interior finishes meet the diverse requirements of university classrooms, laboratory workstations and hospital patient rooms.
