Architectural Excellence : NHBP, contacted IMS, for a solution and partner to develop a Head Start building in Fulton, MI. The building had to blend into the rural wooded area. The design maintained existing green space and trees. The exterior used architectural masonry, lap siding, and a shingled roof to match existing buildings. Installation on a conditioned crawl space and setting at grade allowed for sidewalk entrances rather than traditional systems. Site development included a well, septic system, parking lot, playground, detention system, and a generator. The building is self sufficient with an office, kitchen, restrooms, and a large open area. The interior allows ample room to explore, create, learn and play, with nooks for quiet activities. The interior features 8 ½’ ceilings, carpet tiles, and vinyl covered gypsum walls. The office includes oneway windows to monitor staff and children and a security window allowing parents to check in and out. An additional exit adds access to the playground area.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : This project was on the fast track from day one. Whitley Manufacturing stepped up to the calling and began manufacturing these units on July 10. Both units were ship-ready in 30 days and at the project site in 31 days. IMS collaborated with local subcontractors to conduct the site preparation, installation, and site finishes in 5 weeks. The project site is very rural. Most people in the area rely on LP to run their appliances and heaters, and this building is no different. Their electric bill will be lowered with the use of Bard wall hung HVAC systems and will utilize CO2 sensors to monitor the fresh air in the building. The kitchen is equipped with an LP stove and water heater with the option to change over to an electric stove in the future. The over-sized storage closet is equipped with a LP clothes dryer as well. On the outside of the building, a backup generator was installed. It runs on LP so the children in the headstart building will be warm and safe all year.

Technical Innovation : The building utilized a hinged roof design allowing the roof to be raised and shingled in one afternoon. The utilization of split face block, lap siding, and cedar trim make this building comparable to the site-built buildings of the area. The factory installed crawl space conditioning system provided a quick startup and climate protection for the building. Store front doors and (4) 24” X 48” windows in the children area were utilized to make the building more inviting to parents and children. Children-sized lavatories and water closets make potty time more convenient for the staff and children. The factory-installed underlayment throughout the building provides an excellent base material for the flooring installers. The kitchen mobilized quickly, due to the Island cabinets, cabinets, and appliance rough-ins being completed in the factory. The kitchen staff was up and ready to run in one days time.
