Howard Area Community Center
Additional Info
Project Location City : Chicago
Architectural Excellence : This educational facility was designed to attach to an existing alternative classroom building at grade level. The seamless transition from the original building to the new addition was achieved with a short hallway link that matches the new structure. Parapet walls on three sides of the building hid roof slopes and mechanicals while helping to tie-in the new structure with the old.
Inside the building, 8 ½’ ceiling heights and optimization of window sizes and locations add to a bright and inviting interior.
Award Winner : McDonald Modular Solutions, Inc.
Total Square Feet : 2500
Technical Innovation : The stucco Hardie panel exterior applied in the factory blends in with the masonry exterior of the existing structure. Lexan, unbreakable windows were factory installed to maximize security in the new classroom spaces.
The modular addition includes a mono-slope roof that transfers all storm water to the rear of the building where the underground drains could most efficiently tie-in to the storm sewer. This is significant due to the density of this inner city site.
