Architectural Excellence : The Austin High School in Houston, TX, called in Aries Building Systems, LLC to design, fabricate and install a Temporary Learning Center, while the main campus underwent a 2-year renovation. The goal was to build a temporary modular campus that ensured the safety of students and staff during construction. The modular campus was constructed close to the main campus so students could have access to the same programming, activities, clubs, and sports that they offered. A total of 140 portable buildings made up of large-pack relocatable classrooms were set up, along with a cafeteria and a modular multipurpose structure which can be adapted for all PE activities. The facility includes 50+ classrooms, all administrative offices, and rooms for band, choir, welding, maritime activities, and a shop facility which includes a ship piloting simulation classroom. Aries installed all interior and exterior fittings throughout each building to create appealing classrooms, offices, and hallways.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Aries Building Systems, LLC elected for a modular, temporary campus to save the High School District time and money, without sacrificing a real and close-knit campus feel. The modular campus is made up of large pack relocatable classroom buildings to keep more classrooms under one roof and minimize costs. The entire project design, fabrication, installation, and finishing were completed in 6 weeks to meet the deadline for the start of school. The modules were designed with relocation and reusability in mind when the permanent structure is completed. The building’s modular design ensures reduced maintenance costs and increases the lifespan of the campus structures without sacrificing quality and style.

Technical Innovation : The entire modular campus had to be set up across the street from Austin High School to allow students to access the same programs and activities they offer. All details had to be checked to ensure that the structures could to stand up to extended use by over 1000 students and staff members for 26 months. Aries Building Systems, LLC was given 8 weeks to design, fabricate, transport, and install over 140 modules of large-pack relocatable classroom buildings, walkways, canopies, perimeter fences, and connected parts. Most of the buildings were 10 or 11-plex, allowing for hallways and adjacent rooms to give the modular campus a genuine close-knit campus feel. The structure also had to be constructed in permanent pre-engineered sections due to the potential fire hazards and weights implications. Several innovative enhancements such as reinforced connectors and durable tamper-proofing were implemented to ensure longevity.
