Architectural Excellence : Honomobo HO4’s design and authentic materials maximize the 704-sq-ft. space’s potential via an indoor-outdoor connection. The two-bedroom home could feel small, however, by using large windows at the front and back increases the amount of light, sense of openness, and visual outdoor connection, all making the structure feel larger than it is. HO4’s design fully embraces its assembly of four ISO shipping containers welded together and shows off their corrugated steel shells as the building’s exterior, reinforcing authenticity. This modern design uses high-end, modern interior finishes of dark hardwood flooring, white walls, high-gloss cabinets, and stainless steel appliances, bar stools, and dining chairs. Furniture and a purposeful layout define each room’s use and creates an efficient flow: The rooms are right-sized, not undersized. Many online architectural publications—Curbed, Dezeen, and Business Insider—recognized HO4’s contemporary beauty and clever reuse of shipping containers.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Our H04 embodies the philosophy of “embrace the container.” This means, the building envelope is the actual container and the spray foam insulation, providing R Value and vapour barrier, are inside the container the structure so as not to double up on materials on the outside. With two-part epoxy paint on the exterior of the storage container, it looks finished as well as repels precipitation and protects the residents from wind, heat, or cold. Our electrical and mechanical systems are all high efficient and sized for the space. The Honomobo platform is efficient, simple and repeatable across models, which provides cost effective, consistent installation as well as economies of scale in procurement.

Green Building Description : Green building elements include reusing four metal storage containers that provide an air-tight envelope for residents to enjoy a comfortable, livable temperature, supported by polyurethane spray foam—R25 on walls and R40 on roof—and double-pane, low-e large windows. A lot of natural light reduces the owners’ need for much lighting, reducing their electricity use. Renewable Canadian cedar soffits with UV coating were used due to their accessibility in BC. The home is solar-ready and net positive to produce more energy annually that it uses. It has a high-efficient electric heating and cooling system with an air source heat pump and Energy Recovery Ventilator that circulates fresh air hourly. The air source heat pump hot water tank also aids the building’s maximum efficiency. The home’s electrical energy reliance will be completely offset by solar energy. The home was built indoors and off-site, saving building materials from potential theft, vandalism, or extreme weather conditions.

Technical Innovation : Two-part epoxy paint covers the storage containers’ durable corten steel exterior providing an air-tight envelope with large double-pane, low-e windows. To retain heat, polyurethane spray foam was used along with an air and vapor barrier, giving R25 on the walls and R40 on the roof. This home was manufactured indoors, saving building materials, tools, and trades from exposure to extreme weather conditions. Once all major components were built, the team quickly assembled the pieces on site. The home is solar ready to become net positive, producing more energy annually that it uses. It has a high-efficient electric heating and cooling system with an air source heat pump and Energy Recovery Ventilator for fresh air. The air source heat pump hot water tank also aids maximum efficiency. Renewable Canadian cedar soffits are used with UV coating for beauty and sustainability. No gas units were installed, encouraging electrical power for future reliance on clean energy, wind, and solar.
