Architectural Excellence : A central Texas community church desired an expansion of their child education program. Due to budget and time constraints, the board made the decision to utilize modular construction. The main focus was to have the modular facility complement the appearance of their existing building. This called for matching the existing floor elevation and the exterior finishes. Stucco pattern HardiePanel was used on the exterior with native Austin stone perimeter skirting and retaining walls. This floor plan design allows multi-functional usage for the congregation including 11 classrooms, restroom facilities for all ages, adult restrooms with ADA shower, a large food service area and office space with a front reception area.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : Modular construction allowed the Education Center to be completed in a fraction of the time it would have taken for conventional construction, along with the added savings derived from indoor fabrication. Due to other buildings in the area, and the difference in elevation from pad to road, we used a housecat and trans-lift to complete the task of positioning, allowing further installation savings.

Technical Innovation : This facility was constructed with recycled metal frame, vapor barrier and a stone wall design, which provided a protected crawl space. The design, in conjunction with the French drain storm water system, keeps moisture away from the building. Members of the project team, which included church staff construction experts, civil engineers and BOXX Modular project management, all played key roles to expedite site preparation, utilities and foundation design. The building, placed on the side of a hill, required more than 1000 yards of limestone rock to be milled down to a flat surface, allowing the footing to be placed around the building for the stone walls. T-8 fluorescent lights with occupancy sensors were utilized for higher energy efficiency along with white reflective EPDM rubber roofing. Interior ceiling heights reached 8’8” for area comfort, and back-to-back double walls between the classrooms provide superior noise reduction.
