Architectural Excellence : As you enter this building you come into a foyer with access to the business offices and both classrooms. This layout minimized the space required for hallways and maximized the space available for teaching, support and administrative functions, while providing good visual supervision of the classroom entry doors. Both classrooms have children’s restrooms opening directly off of them, and the centrally located kitchen can directly service both classrooms.
The location of the building on an existing school campus, adjacent to a residential neighborhood, influenced the decision to have a pitched roof, and the selection of the exterior finishes was in keeping with the customers desire to have the facility have a home-like feeling vs. the institutional feeling of the adjacent school.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : We designed this building with an insulation package consisting of R-25 in the floors, R-19 in the walls, and R-30 in the roof. We also used dual glazed, low-E solar tinted windows and selected heat pumps with economizers to provide a building that should be very cost effective to operate from an energy use perspective.

Technical Innovation : Due to the size of the building and desired pitch of the roof, we opted to design a roof system around site-installed trusses. Our engineer worked with a truss manufacturing company located in the area of the proposed building site to develop a roof truss package which was then included with our building engineering as part of the submittal documents for plan review. Because the construction schedule called for a spring installation, a temporary water management system was installed to protect the building until the roof system could be completed on site.
