Architectural Excellence : The HRBT tunnel expansion is the largest transportation project in VDOT history for the installation of two (2) new two-lane tunnels. The three (3) modular complexes were individually designed to maximize efficiency at three separate locations. The North Island Site was comprised of (21) 12’ x 40’ modules, South Island’s location had a 2-Story structure with (28) 12’ x 40’ modules, and Willoughby Spit’s site had (21) 12’ x 60’ modules. All structures incorporated a central corridor with strategically placed egress points that allowed the buildings to be built without the need for fire suppression sprinkler systems. High Rib Steel exterior finishes coincided with existing building finishes which allowed for blending and matching facades.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : Minimizing site disturbance and debris management were extremely important because of the work being conducted in proximity of a transportation artery and associated traffic throughfare. By limiting site disturbance, the customer saved approximately $300k for below-ground foundations in addition to removing requirements for storm water management controls and saving another estimated $150k. The efficient module designs allowed for the removal of fire suppression sprinklers in all structures saving the customer about $400k in building costs and tremendous savings in infrastructure to bring services to all locations.

Project Location City : Norfolk

Project Location State Name : VA

Technical Innovation : All three buildings were designed, configured, oriented, and placed to meet site setbacks and Life Safety requirements for use and occupancy. At Grade foundation systems were designed and implemented at all three locations which saved the customer time and a tremendous cost savings in comparison to below ground foundations. During installation we overcame a very challenging requirement to make accommodations for a protected migratory bird in the region. It was brought to our attention that if one of these birds nested onsite, it would require the area to be cordoned off until the hatchlings left the nest. Protective measures included non-lethal spikes and wires to be installed along the roof perimeters in addition to 24-hour patrolling of specially trained canines to drive potential birds from the property which resulted in zero downtime or delays on our end.
