Architectural Excellence : Hampshire County in West Virginia needed a secure building to house their 911 call center. The county needed the secure structure to be compliant with all state, local and federal requirements for 911 buildings, but also wanted it to have an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable atmosphere. This non-combustible building has steel framing and support structures that were welded in the factory to meet strict specifications. Steel decking was welded directly to the frame structure with ¾” T & G sheets of FORTACRETE® screwed directly to the steel, providing a solid and secure base for the structure. The exterior finish is brick and the interior walls have a neutral covering, both concealing the steel supports. Large bullet-resistant windows allow plenty of light and an open feel without compromising security.

Cost Energy Effectiveness : The building was configured to allow numerous finishes to be partially or fully applied at the factory, preserving the client’s accelerated construction timeline. The exterior wall assembly is composed of 5/8” Densglass with an air-infiltration barrier over R-13 F.S.K. fiberglass batt insulation. The exterior masonry covering provides another layer of protection from energy loss through the building envelope. Licensed fire-protection contractors began the system in the factory, minimizing the expense and delays of acquiring specialized contractors at the building site. All aspects of the design considered security, ability to meet the time-line, and control of cost. Costs effective methods were employed not only in the production of the building, but also in the on-going energy saving aspects of the building, creating great savings for the client.

Technical Innovation : Modern security measures were utilized to meet the high security requirements of 911 call centers. 2-hour fire rated wall assemblies composed of 5/8” fire-rated gypsum panels overlaying 5/8” sheets of Class I.F.S. were used. Windows are level 4 bullet proof glass. The doorways feature unique security technology, which limits access. Insulated commercial steel doors with safety-glazed glass vision panels are protected by electric locking mechanisms with card readers. A pair of roof-mounted heat pumps service two distinct interior climate zones. The first heat pump is fitted with an economizer for energy efficiency and services the dispatch area of the building. Emergency push-button controls can be utilized to quickly seal fresh air dampers and maintain indoor air quality. The buildings fire suppression systems meet NFPA “Light Hazard” requirements.
