Architectural Excellence : H.C. Wilcox Technical School was in need of a temporary classroom complex to accommodate roughly 500 occupants while its existing school underwent a large renovation project. Due to limited space and site conditions, the client needed a fast and flexible building solution. M SPACE provided 16 modular classrooms and two restrooms to serve as swing space until the renovation was complete. The 16,848 square foot modular facility was placed on a former bus lane on the existing campus. This long, narrow site prompted M SPACE to provide a building that measured 468’ in length while only being 36’ wide. The building utilized an in line design featuring a corridor with classrooms flanking one side. Men’s and women’s restrooms were included at the midway point, along with service sinks. Vinyl tiled flooring was used throughout the facility along with vinyl frame and clear insulated low E glass windows. The exterior features SmartSide panels for a lighter and more durable building finish.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The client chose modular construction to ensure that students, educators and staff had a space to continue functions while the renovation to its existing school took place. The buildings were designed to be easily relocated and reconfigured, saving the client money on new construction. Modular units were placed onsite in a former bus lane, eliminating the inconvenience of relocating students and staff from the schools’ campus. To further increase marketability and reuse, the building was designed with an 8’ corridor so classrooms could be installed on opposing ends, creating a center corridor design. Interior walls were furnished with affordable high impact wainscoting to increase durability and cut costs.

Technical Innovation : The modular buildings were designed and manufactured to be easily converted into single, double and quad classroom configurations. Upon the initial lease expiration, classrooms can be broken apart and re-purposed or relocated, should the client still require space. This was accomplished by installing exterior walls at the matelines between each classroom. Additionally, each classroom includes its own electrical panel and mechanical system enabling each unit to be a future stand-alone building. One hour walls were installed in corridors as well as one hour walls and ceiling in the utility room to prevent the spread of fire. The HVAC system features 325 CFM fresh air intake and bard economizer to increase comfort and improve indoor air quality.
