Group Health Cooperative Clinic

Award Winner : DIRTT Environmental Solutions
Architectural Excellence : The owners consider this clinic to be the crown jewel in their organization. They were able to design a space that optimizes their real estate, is comfortable and inviting for patients and provides a desirable workspace for staff.
They were also pleased with the ability to integrate all kinds of technology and equipment in the cavity of walls, placed where it best suits staff and yet remains accessible for facilities to maintain.
Thanks to the custom prefab approach of DIRTT, the client and design firm designed cabinetry to suit everything from crutches to bandages, without incurring custom-sizing costs.
Elements such as sliding doors and horizontal support mechanisms on walls provides the clinic with a sense of a larger space, when in fact it is a compact square footage.
Wood, glass, metal and film give the clinic a warmth, permanence and uniqueness.
Cost Energy Effectiveness : The software not only allows end-users to explore their space and understand the design - it also automatically produces the exact price and modifies it as the design is modified. This allowed the GHC team to stay on budget as they made important decisions about the outcome of the space.
During construction the building itself only needed to be brought to a condition where it was a warm shell with flooring down, HVAC installed and lighting. This required very few sub-trades. Meanwhile the equivalent of all the studs, finishes, electrical, glazing, millwork, doors and data were being produced in the DIRTT production facilities.
As technologies, clinical methodologies and demographics change the space can flex to react without demolition or rebuilding.

Green Building Description : As with all prefab, DIRTT's factory assembly of exact requirements results in dramatically less material waste. It also results in a lower carbon footprint due to fewer trades traveling to the job-site during a shorter schedule.
The resulting space is filled with daylight and views. The optimization of the real estate means less heating and cooling. The ability to access the cavities of walls to maintain fixtures and equipment means no demolition, noise, debris, disposal or rebuilding. The horizontal support mechanism in the walls means being able to hang any furniture, fixtures and equipment anywhere that suits ergonomics and room layout. This horizontal method also provides a longer lifecycle for the furniture and fixtures that need to hang from walls as the end-user isn't contained by vertical supports such as studs.

Technical Innovation : Patented 3D software is used to design, communicate, price, manufacture, install and asset manage for future configurations. The physical DIRTT components are engineered so they can be prefabricated in any dimensions, integrating any performance needs and aesthetic desired by the end-user and design team. All pricing is based on material amounts. No project design is ever the same - bringing prefab into the custom world of construction.
The software virtually eliminates human error as there is no transfer and transcription of data between design, engineering, quoting and manufacturing. It also feeds specific manufacturing data to other vendors providing materials to the DIRTT factory. For example, the glass vendor is sent manufacturing data they can feed directly into their production. It means they can meet the 2-week DIRTT lead-time for production without hurting their own business processes even while participating with a company on such a fast-tracked schedule.
